Stage 1 of HSE audit for ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 concluded

Strong HSE operating standards are key to a Qatalum’s success. Having to measure Qatalum’s leadership performance in health, safety and environment allows for sustainable growth of all aspects of the smelter.

In between the 7th to 8th of April 2015, the ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 stage 1 audit was concluded by certification body Bureau Veritas. The stage 2 audit will be held on May 2015

The main purpose of ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 Certification is to assess and evaluate the HSE Management System at Qatalum.

ISO 14001 & OHSAS 18001 Certification was initiated by the HSE Department. The project team are Deon Earle, Addi Atta Abboah-Offei, Jeff Sandoval, Joy Abraham, Andi Mappangara and Cecep Gunawan.

Certification Audit was held over two days with a detailed itinerary.

Day 1 saw the auditors hold one-on-one interviews with HSE section heads for Environment, Safety, Occupational Hygiene, Occupational Health and Emergency Management

Day 2 consisted of a site tour to operational areas which included Reduction, Technical, Carbon, Casthouse, Power Plant and the Laboratory. The site tour was facilitated by Heads of HSE and supported by the Group Management Team.

The opening and closing meetings were attended by Qatalum CEO and DCEO, and Level 2 Managers.

Qatalum CEO, Tom Petter Johansen said, “Qatalum acknowledges this certification to know the opportunity for continuous improvement from an outside perspective.”

Khalid Laram, DCEO commented, “Qatalum is a unique plant with a multinational workforce. We are open for this certification for potential development and further improvement of the Qatalum HSE Management System.”

Deon Earle, HSE Manager concluded, “Qatalum is a very transparent company. We will provide whatever is required for the audit and the QMT is in full support of this initiative.”

During the closed out meeting, auditors presented some points for improvement and acknowledged commendable support and awareness from the management level.

The findings presented are of help to further improve the Qatalum HSE Management System.
