Qatalum Holds First Quarter Contractor HSE Forum

Qatalum recently held the First Quarter's Contractor HSE forum, at the Mesaieed Industrial City (MIC) Golf Club, on 30 March 2017.

The forum focused on measures to improve the channels of communication between Qatalum and its contractors, resulting in a more streamlined collaboration between the two groups.

The forum is a direct reflection of Qatalum's ceaseless efforts to ensure that all contractors whom Qatalum engages with, have a clear understanding of Qatalum's HSSE priorities, and strictly adhere to them.

The attendees, who included contractor management representatives, Qatalum management team and contract sponsors, were warmly welcomed by the CEO of Qatalum, Khalid Laram, and Olaf Wigstoel, the company's Chief Operating Officer. Both the speakers emphasized the importance of adhering to Qatalum's HSE Management System, with the aim of achieving and maintaining a world class safety performance. Contractors were reminded to ensure that their HSSE performance was in line with the standards expected from them. The welcome session also saw a safety briefing by Jorge Kangoma, HSE Lead-Carbon.

The event saw a series of presentations, discussions and open forums, by the participating groups. Contractors representing Tyco, Multi Mech and Paragon Shipping presented their respective company's HSSE performance, statistics, key activities, and achievements.

GE, a contractor company in Power Plant, shared lessons learnt on the finger injury that happened in GT 11. Marcegaglia, gave a presentation on Working at Heights, while Future Engineering delivered how Hand Injury Awareness is carried out by their company.

The presentations were followed by discussions and open forums, which saw the lively participation of Qatalum's staff and the company's contractors.  During the session, contractors gave their feedback and offered practical suggestions on various concerns such as methods to improve the effectiveness of future forum, alignment in contractors' understanding of Qatalum's HSSE procedures, and challenges they faced in communication.

The forum closed with Deon Earle, HSSE Manager, thanking the participants for their valuable suggestions and insight. Qatalum's HSSE Manager also noted how the success of the event reflected the necessity of such forums to facilitate the best possible working environment in Qatalum.
