QU Honours 4th HSWBC Winners

The 4th High School Wooden Bridge Competition organized by the Department of Civil and Architectural Engineering at Qatar University College of Engineering (QU-CENG) and sponsored by Qatalum, ended with a closing award ceremony attended by Dr Khalifa Al Khalifa CENG dean,  Dr Saud Abdulghani ,CENG Associate Dean for Development and Industrial Relations, Dr Mohammed Farouk department acting head, Ibrahim Fakhri, Qatalum’s Communications Manager and a number of faculty members and representatives of the participating schools and students.

At the end of the event, Qatar Banking Studies and Business Administration Independent Secondary School for Boys was named the winner.

16 schools and over 50 Qatari students participated in the competition which started last November.  It is one of several high school outreach programs conducted by CENG to motivate students to join the field of engineering in general and civil engineering in particular.

CAE head Dr Mohammed Farouk said: “The creative styles of bridges this year highlighted the enthusiasm the students and teachers had for the competition which is growing in popularity.  We look forward to engaging even more schools and students in our ongoing commitment to attracting young students to the importance of engineering in our everyday life and to the progress and development of society”.

CENG dean Dr Khalifa Al Khalifa said:  “As a result of CENG’s many outreach initiatives such as the Wooden Bridge Competition, we have had an increase in student numbers in the last few years, which will serve to meet market demand for more skilled engineers.  High school outreach is a key component of the College’s vision and strategic plan. It is important for us to be part of the national process of building a cadre of qualified engineers to contribute their knowledge and experience to the country’s progress”.

“I am pleased to be here today at the closing ceremony of the 4th High School Wooden Bridge Competition organized by Qatar University College of Engineering and honoring the winners of the competition that encourages high school students in Qatar to study engineering, especially civil engineering to provide the Qatari community with highly skilled engineers in their respected fields. Such competitions provide our students with the opportunity to test their imaginative abilities and enhance their engineering skills by building models of bridges with strong designs capable of resisting the loads gradually applied during the test. These events help encourage students to go for professional paths related to Engineering and mathematics which are critical skills to achieve success and excellence in the 21st century.” Said Ibrahim Fakhri, Communications Manager at Qatalum.
