On the 29th of April, the Gulf Aluminium Council conducted its annual dinner in Abu Dhabi bringing together key individuals from the regional industry.
Over 200 attendees made up of chief executive officers, senior executives and government officials from different parts of the world met to celebrate the continued success of the aluminium industry in the Gulf. Qatalum was strongly represented by some of the hard working board and management team who took the opportunity to further the course of Qatalum’s progress as a leading regional smelter. The delegation was headed by Qatalum’s CEO, Tom Petter Johansen and DCEO Khalid Laram.
The GAC is a coordinating body that represents, promotes and protects the interests of the aluminium industry within the Gulf. The council’s main objectives are to provide a forum to develop strategies for common issues and concerns facing the aluminium industry in the region, and to share best practices so as to improve the efficiency of the industry.
Based on last year’s success, the Gulf Aluminium Dinner’s significance is a reflection of the Gulf’s emerging economic prominence in the global aluminium industry. The regions aluminium industry is developing into a global player in which aluminium production currently exceeds 7 per cent of the world’s total production and could increase to 10 per cent by 2020. Qatar is in a very advantageous position to become a leading contributor to this regional figure and in so doing, developing our own downstream aluminium sector.
