Contractors’ Commitment Pledged during HSSE Forum

The Contractor HSSE Forum is a significant collaboration between Qatalum and contractors which delivers an effective platform for further improvement.

Underlining the highest levels of commitment to health and safety, Qatalum’s contractors stood before the gathered audience at the most recent company HSSE Forum, to pledge their commitment to zero total recordable injuries in 2018.
This “Contractors’ Management Commitment” was delivered in front of the Qatalum CEO, management team and contract sponsors during the forum on 18th July 2018 18 evet at the Al Reem Club in Measieed Industrial City.

Khalid Mohammed Laram, Qatalum CEO, welcomed forum attendees by acknowledging the commendable safety performance by contractors as of June 2018. He highlighted the forum’s effectiveness in helping this contractors’ achievement.

The CEO also took the opportunity to highlight ongoing safety measures to avoid heat stress – such as making cooling rooms and drinking water available and accessible. He underlined the need for risk assessment with mitigating actions on works during summer, and stressed the need for all staff, contractors and all those involved in works to ensure they are aware of heat stress symptoms.

An update on Qatalum’s HSSE Performance and Heat Stress Management were presented by Deon Earle, HSSE Manager and Jorge Kangoma, HSE Lead respectively. The safety performance was lauded by the HSSE Manager, who posted a challenge to contractors to not only maintain the high record, but always strive to do better.

Al Rafdeen Transport, Trading and Service Company (ATC), which supplied manpower for the casthouse, logistics and warehouse divisions, showed their HSE performance, activities and initiatives.

Qatalum’s “Life Saving Rules #1” – which focuses on traffic and pedestrian safety requirements and the “Revised General Work Permit” requirements were presented to forum attendees by Sarel Greyling, HSE Lead.

Following the forum’s agenda, a representative from EMCO showcased the company’s heat stress management programme, followed by a valuable food safety presentation from Draieh Logistics Services Co.

HSE Lead Jorge Kangoma facilitated an open forum, where each contractor was asked for their insights on how to effectively manage heat stress.

Deon Earle, HSSE Manager, closed the forum with sincere appreciation of the Qatalum Management Team (QMT), contract sponsors and contractor management representatives.
