On the 10 March 2016, between 10:00 am and 12.00 pm, Qatalum chaired the first of four Contractor HSE Forum’s for the year 2016. This forum took place at the MIC Golf Club and was themed, ‘Strengthening Management Commitment and Visible Leadership’.
The Contractor HSE Forum is held as per Qatalum Contractor HSE Management standard. The forum provides an opportunity for Qatalum and contractor management to discuss, interact and address issues and concerns related to HSE.
According to Qatalum’s HSSE manager, Deon Earle, there featured an increased number of management representatives from the contractors, an active open forum and a fruitful discussion on HSE-related issues and concerns.
Several presentations were made by the contractors and of particular note was ‘Hand Injury Awareness’ by Black Cat Construction. Qatalum can learn and adopt the program presented to reduce hand and finger injuries on site.
Despite the lack of time, Issues addressed during the forum were:
• Developing higher standards and efficiency within a tough economic reality
• Self-Declaration of Medical Conditions
• Traffic and Pedestrian Safety in Disembarking of Passengers in the Admin Building
The forum became the venue to launch this year’s Heat Stress Awareness Campaign. Additionally, involvement and participation of contractors were considered through the ‘Name your Campaign’ initiative. This initiative enables contractors to be part of the safety theme naming campaign of the HSSE Department through their ideas, suggestions and inputs in the upcoming Heat Stress Awareness Campaign.
Despite contractor demobilization from site, 18 companies sent their management representative to attend the forum.
Deon Earle, HSSE Manager said, “This is the best Contractor HSE Forum so far. I would like to render my sincerest appreciation to each and every one of you in this forum. But we still have to keep and strengthen our management commitment in keeping our workforce safe!”
