Qatalum has held an awards ceremony on 9 February 2012 for students who in the company’s Holiday Safety Campaign with the theme ‘Qatalum Family – Always check safety list’, intended to highlight the biggest dangers during the holiday season. As part of the campaign, children aged 9 to 12 at Mesaieed International School and Qatar Norwegian School were invited to take part in a poster-making competition to highlight holiday safety.
At the ceremony, which took place at Mesaieed Industrial area, certificates and gifts were distributed for students who participated in a drawing competition about health, safety and environment. Mr. Khalifa Al Khuzaei, Communications Officer, Mr. Deon Earle, Qatalum Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Manager, who attended at the Norwegian School and Kurt Nilsson, Chief Quality and Health, Safety, Environment Officer HSEQ who attended at the Mesaieed International School and Mr. Gregory Charles Ramsden, Head of Primary from Mesaieed International School (MIS) presented the awards, the respective attending manager from Qatalum spoke to the students about the importance of safety and thanked their contribution in such events.
Mr. Gregory Charles Ramsden, Head of Primary at MIS said: “Our school has always been very keen to participate in such events since awareness about safety is very important, and our partnership with Qatalum is important as many students are children of Qatalum employees, so this is a long-standing and valued relationship we have”.
Besides the certificates and gifts distributed for students who participated in the drawing competition about health, safety and environment, Mr. Al Khuzaei gave an honorary award to the Qatar Norwegian School, presented to headmaster Mr. Tor Oisang.
The competition started the day after the launch of the campaign on 5 December, and ran until 11 December 2011, and suggested topics included fire hazards, travel safety, holiday food safety, safety plans for parties, lights and decorations safety, and smoke detectors and fire extinguishers. Drawing kits were distributed to the children, together with the list of suggested topics. The campaign also includes placing posters around the plant, distributing flyers to staff and setting up an information station at the service building to give staff tips on how they can prevent troubles through the holidays.
Topics covered by the campaign include proper checking and positioning of lights and decorations; avoiding or controlling common fire hazards, such as candles; installation and positioning of smoke detectors and fire extinguishers; preparation and storing of holiday food; planning for parties, including proper, restrained use of alcohol; preparations and precautions for safe travel; and holiday stress relievers, such as staying within budget, and delegations and planning of holiday tasks.
