Technology

  • Performance

Qatalum will be the largest primary aluminium plant ever built in one phase. It will be a fully-integrated primary aluminium plant consisting of a smelter, casthouse and carbon plant as well as a dedicated gas fired power plant with a capacity of approximately 1,350 MW.

    Primary aluminium plant

The primary aluminium reduction plant, where the actual metal production takes place, constitutes the main part of the Qatalum project.
  • Carbon plant

The carbon plant manufactures carbon anodes, which are a vital part of the primary aluminium production process. It consists of a paste plant and an anode baking plant. From its start-up, the carbon plant will produce approximately 300,000 tonnes of anodes per year for use in the potlines.
  • Casthouse prosess

    Casthouse

The Qatalum casthouse has been designed to produce 625,000 tonnes of casthouse products per year. Its main products will be extrusion ingots and foundry alloys. The casthouse will also house equipment for producing standard primary ingots.
  • Power plant

The Qatalum power plant will be a combined-cycle power plant with the capacity to supply 1350 MW to the aluminium plant.
